U.S.-U.A.E. Business Council Hosts President & CEO Elect of Cleveland Clinic in Washington

The U.S.-U.A.E. Business Council was honored to host Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic, President and CEO Elect of Cleveland Clinic, for a roundtable luncheon at Cafe Milano in Washington D.C. Dr. Mihaljevic was joined by senior-level business executives and officials representing the U.A.E. Embassy in Washington. Danny Sebright, President of the U.S.-U.A.E. Business Council, provided brief remarks outlining the overall U.S.-U.A.E. healthcare relationship before opening the floor for an informal discussion with Dr. Mihaljevic.

Business Council, hosts Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi,  Cathy Easter, President and CEO of Houston Methodist Global Health Care Services, Dr. Kurt Newman, President & CEO of Children’s National, and other senior-level business executives at Cafe Milano in Washington D.C.

In his conversation, Dr. Mihaljevic highlighted Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s (CCAD) success in the region and the importance of establishing an ever-growing relationship with Emirati public and private-sector institutions. “Our partnership with Mubadala and The Abu Dhabi Health Authority was critical to the success of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in becoming an example for U.S. and U.A.E. healthcare partnerships. Nothing is more important than our commitment to providing world-class healthcare to the region, which is why we constructed a state-of-the-art medical facility in Abu Dhabi. CCAD has 350 North American or European board certified physicians with direct access to the resources at Cleveland Clinic, which has allowed us to treat over 285,000 outpatient visits and nearly 5,500 admissions last year alone.”

Prior to Dr. Mihaljevic’s remarks, Mr. Sebright said, “As the U.A.E. healthcare sector appears set to continue its impressive growth in the coming decades, opportunities for new U.S.-U.A.E. partnerships abound. The Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi stands as a shining example of these many possibilities.”

During the question and answer session, Dr. Mihaljevic provided insights into the future vision of Cleveland Clinic as well as upcoming trends and challenges in the U.S. healthcare industry.

Dr. Mihaljevic will succeed Dr. Toby Cosgrove as the President and CEO of Cleveland Clinic effective January 1, 2018. Dr. Mihaljevic joined Cleveland Clinic in 2004 as a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and robotically assisted cardiac surgery before becoming CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in 2015.

Tomislav (Tom) Mihaljevic, MD, has been appointed as CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic beginning January 1, 2018. He will head the $8 billion healthcare system including a main campus, 10 regional hospitals, 18 family health and surgery centers, and hospitals and clinics in Florida, Nevada, Toronto, Abu Dhabi and London (opening 2020).

He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a world-class multispecialty hospital specifically designed to address a range of Abu Dhabi’s most complex medical requirements. In his role as CEO, Dr. Mihaljevic is responsible for leading the organization’s approximately 3,000 Caregivers and overseeing Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s overall strategy and effective operation as the first-ever US multispecialty hospital to be replicated outside of North America.

A native of Croatia, he received his medical degree from the University of Zagreb. Dr. Mihaljevic started his education in cardiac surgery at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. In 1995, he joined the Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School, where he completed residency in general and cardiac surgery and served as Chief Resident in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Children’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Mihaljevic is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.

He specializes in minimally invasive and robotically assisted cardiac surgeries, valve repair and replacement, image-guided surgery, heart failure and cardiac transplantation
